Malawi’s Tourist District

The southern lakeshore district of Mangochi is Malawi’s tourist district. Here you will be entertained to several tourist products , activities and visits to places of diverse interests.

Cape Maclear, the then Cape Town to Cairo flying boat stopover point, has turned out to be the area not to be missed. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a veritable aquarium of tropical fish providing a colourful kaleidoscopic display.

Southern Lakeshore & Cape Maclear Tour Itinerary

Arrive met and assisted at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe. Sunrise Ground Tours Representative is there for you. Transfer by road to Makokola Retreat passing through the Malawi-Mozambique border.

See the remnants of Mozambican civil wars on one side of the border and the untouched area on the Malawi side. The trip takes three and half hours to the southern shores of Lake Malawi’s premier destination of Makokola Retreat.

Sundown boat cruise is at your disposal (at a nominal additional charge). A range of water sports activities are available from the hotel both complimentary and those with a minimal charge.

Excursion to Cape Maclear, a fresh underwater national park which was proclaimed a World  Heritage Site in 1980.

On your way to Cape Maclear you will make a brief stopover enroute at Mwala WA Mphini and Nkope Hill.

Birdlife is also prolific in the area. Nature has endowed Lake Malawi with the richest variety of tropical fish. More than 450 species are found here.

Lake Malawi National Park was established primarily to protect some of Lake Malawi’s very rich aquatic life, the park is particularly well known for its colourful fish population popularly called  Cichlid.
